Spotify reaches 40 million paying users

Spotify has reached the limit of 40 million paying subscribers. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced this via Twitter yesterday. In March the counter was still at 30 million paying users.

The originally Swedish streaming service is therefore still a lot bigger than a competitor Apple Music, which saw the number of users increase from 13 to 17 million since April. At Tidal, the counter currently stands at around 4 million users.

Dutch music industry grows in the first half of 2016

The turnover of the Dutch music industry grew substantially in the first half of 2016 due to a significant increase in the use of streaming services. That message today based on figures from industry organization NVPI.


In the first six months of this year, streaming services generated 40 million euros, a growth of 52 percent. This makes streaming good for more than half of the income of Dutch artists.

Streaming now most popular form of music consumption in the US

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced this week that last year revenue from streaming services in the United States for the first time exceeded that of digital downloads and physical sales.

The RIAA further reports that streaming revenues are more than $ 2 billion for the first time. In total, music streams now account for 34,3% of total music sales in the United States. Music downloads - mainly from iTunes - account for 34,0% and physical sales make up 28,8% of total sales. The latter category still consists mainly of the sale of CDs. The other 2,9% of the total turnover consists of deals where music is used in advertising or film, for example.
